Conditioned air leakage often occurs around furnace and A/C air handlers.  Sealing all leakage sites around the furnace in an approved manner eliminates leakage, without compromising the fire safety of the equipment.
Some furnaces are simply to old to modify and require replacement. We hire Energy Star certified state licensed contractor for installation of high-efficiency equipment.
Consistent coverage is a key to adequate overall R-value of the attic insulation.  We identify missing or low insulation areas (usually occurring in spots where prior repairs / retrofits have been conducted) and update loose-fill insulation as per the Energy Star protocol requirements.
Vertical cavities connected to the attic are one of the most common and costly attic insulation defects.  We identify all attic chases and seal them off as per Energy Star program guidelines. .
Leaky ductwork may account for up to 40% of conditioned air loss.  If duct blaster test (part of the assessment process)  indicates high leakage, we re-seal all duct connections to reduce leakage to 5% or less.
Retrofitting attic knee-wall insulation is one of the most common and cost-effective ways to improve comfort and safe energy.  Fiberglass batting installed vertically tends to separate from stud cavities thereby reducing its R-value essentially to zero. Energy Star protocol requires installation of rigid foam board on the attic side of all walls separating conditioned spaces from vented attic spaces.  It ensures insulation contact with drywall, while at the same time increases the R-value of the wall assembly and eliminates air leakage
Insulating and weather-stripping attic access doors and panels is another way of achieving noticeable energy saving with minimal expense.
In many instances we service existing windows for improved performance. However, if the house furnishes old metal frame single pane window units, the only option is wholesale replacement with Energy Star rated Low-E2 double pane windows with Argon gas filler and Foam filed frames.
Each house is unique and ABCD’s  specially is identifying the ways to improve efficiency, rate them in the order of cost-effectiveness, and then let you, our customer, determine the scope of work.
Below are just several samples of various energy improvements we perform.
